HDV Footage & XDCam Footage on the Same Timeline
My place of business has just gotten into using HD footage that we have purchased. One project needs to combine XDCam footage and HDV footage (already in digital QT format) into one edited project.
Since these formats seem to have different frame sizes and fps rates is there a conversion I should do to either of these to get them to work properly on one timeline?
I haven’t had any luck… either the picture gets pixelated or the audio becomes out of sync on the timeline… I am SURE I am doing something wrong, so any help is greatly appreciated. I don’t want to sound like a simpleton here, but I can’t seem to get this right. Help! Deadline! =) -

Use a ProRes sequence. Putting one GOP format into a sequence set to ANOTHER GOP format, is just asking for trouble. Use an I-Frame sequence setting like ProRes will make life MUCH easier.

“XDCAM” ? Different frame sizes and fps rates ? You need to be a lot more specific.
For example, HDV is 1440×1080, XDCAM HD is also 1440×1080 and comes in three flavours, LP, SP and HQ (and XDCAM HD “SP” pretty much is HDV). Then there are XDCAM EX codecs and XDCAM HD 422 variants. And there are SD formats too ie DV and IMX, can also be “XDCAM” codecs.
Fwiw, when working with any flavour of XDCAM HD and HDV (same frame size, same frame rate) you can mix them to your hearts content with nary a hiccup. I know that I (and many others) have done this regularly without issue.
But that said, just because you can doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be better off following Shane’s “ProRes sequence” advice 😉
