The Vegas 8 HDV capture utility won’t recognize my Sony HVR-V1U camera or the Sony HDV deck. It just says “device not available.” I know I have HDV on the tape as I can play it back on the camera and I know it’s not a cable or port problem because I can capture it on a mac with iMovie.

The PC can even see the device – in My Computer “Sony DV Tape REcorder” is listed under Scanners and Cameras.

Any thoughts on why Vegas can’t see it?

    thanks,

Some Sony hdv cams (dont know about the decks) have an HDV , DV and automatic setting , make sure you have it on hdv and not auto. hope that helps

I’m having the same issue with my V1U. How do you change the settings? Is it a camera setting or in Vegas? Many thanks, this is driving me nuts

    Jon,
It’s a camera setting, in the menus. I don’t have the camera in front of me but it’s the menu where you have a choice between DV HDV or Auto. Change it from Auto to HDV.

When I started this thread, I was editing on a Mac Pro using Windows XP via Boot Camp. I ‘m on a real PC now with Windows 7 and have fewer connection problems.

    Hello,

OK, I too am having issues with my Sony V1U and capturing HDV footage. I’ve read this thread, changed the camera settings to playback at HDV (as suggested) and I am able to capture.

However, though I’ve changed all my capture presets and device control presets to capture HDV in FCP, it seems my video is only capturing at 720 X 480 (853 X 480 anamorphic). I know the footage was recorded at HDV 1440 X 1080 (and it says as much on the screen menu when I play the tape back in my V1U camera), so why isn’t it being captured at HDV 1440 X 1080? I’ve gone through all of my capture settings in FCP and my camera settings and everything is set up properly. I’m at a loss as to why FCP won’t capture my footage at the frame size it was shot at.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use FCP 7.0.2 on Mac with Snow Leopard OS.

    Thanks!

    -Marc-

You should probably ask this question in the FCP forum.
