HDV Capture–what am I doing wrong?
Posted by Jim Murphy on June 7, 2009 at 4:45 amThis is the first time I have captured HDV, and I am running into some big problems. Although the tape looks good when I am watching it capture, some of the clips are not showing up. It looks like several seconds vanish. E.g., Ceremony 001 clip plays, then several seconds vanish, and the next clip is numbered Ceremony 002. Has anyone run into this before? Do I have some setting wrong? This is really frustrating. Jim

other computer you are gonna capture in, is the same as
the one you are using….Then lets know the result.Steve Rhoden

June 7, 2009 at 2:40 pmIf you are using Vegas HDV capture utility is has some bugs that Sony is aware of, but has not fixed in several releases. Scene detection cuts frames off of every scene and includes the frames from previous clips after the split point. It sounds like this is what you are seeing and you are not doing anything wrong; it’s just a know bug.
What you need to do is in the HDV capture utility, open the Prefs and on the General tab uncheck [ ] Enable HDV scene detection. This fixes *most* of the problem. I say most because it still mysteriously cuts your clips at random places in the capture. Very annoying for those of us using HDV tape. 🙁

June 7, 2009 at 6:44 pmSteve, thanks for responding. Which preferences are you referring to? The preferences in capture, specifying the firewire connection and the camera? The option to stop when there are dropped frames, etc.? Thanks, Jim

June 7, 2009 at 7:19 pmI was only referring for you to use the same capture
setting you originally had…..to maybe pinpoint what
was causing the issue.
Have you already tried using an external capture
utility like HDVSplit or CapDVHS..etc ?Steve Rhoden

June 7, 2009 at 8:22 pmThanks for the links. Does one program work better than the other? I don’t want to use scene detection. I like to keep the capture in large files. Jim
