I’m using a JVCpro HD workflow, and am struggling to find the best way to finish to a standard def DVD. The footage is captured into FCP via firewire using the HDV720p 24 easy set up. This yields gorgeous results playing out to HD TV. Anyway, I’ve used the 90minute two pass setting in compressor to output a standard def. compressed version for DVD studio pro, and it looks just “ok”. I’ve also used the JVC deck to downconvert the footage via component analog into FCP through an AJA IO. This footage has better resolution results, but the color coming back in through the AJA is not even close to the original HD. Am I missing something? Is there a better way to make a standard definition DVD?

    Thanks,

[Matthew McCann] “Is there a better way to make a standard definition DVD?”

    yes indeed.

copy that 90 minute preset then go into the “resize” section and make sure the quality is set for best. You may need to click the box next to it to get to those grayed out options.
Change the GOP from 14 to 7 or whatever the lowest number is too.

In the frame rate I would leave it set to automatic. Hopefully compressor will pass it through in 24fps mode and flag the clip so the player will do the pullup to 29.97 on the fly like most film originated discs do.

Resizing should look way better than the BR-HD50U can do which is not really that great to begin with.

If I’m not misunderstanding you, what you should do for any downconversion is analog component out of the deck into AJA and let the AJA downsize it if it has that capability. The scaler in the HD50U is pretty lousy.

There is no way your standard def DVD will look as good as your original HD footage. For one thing, you have half the number of pixels. There’s also a difference between the HD & SD color spaces. That doesn’t mean that you can’t make a really good looking DVD, but you can’t expect it to look like your original HD footage.
