HD/SDI from MBP display port?
Posted by Marcel Franck on November 24, 2009 at 2:50 pmHello to all…I Edit in FCP on my new MBP and I want to monitor on a proper monitor, ie flanders or pani 17″…since my footage is coming from a memory card i dont think i need a aja iohd…i am not outputting to tape….why can’t i use a dvi to hd/sdi converter like one from convergent designs to feed the monitor? I dont know what the actual specs are coming out from the dvi port when i choose video playback cinema display full screen…can someone like mr.zelin or mr. biscardi
help me answer this question….? i’m sure there’s a good reason why this won’t work…just don’t know….
thanks in advance

November 24, 2009 at 3:04 pmInteresting … because I am able to do that for Projectors. DVI Out to them for live shows that I do. And it even recognizes the Second monitor as a preview monitor that I can use with Final Cut.
Not to test your knowledge on your Mac. … but did you tell the graphics card to make the second monitor a second monitor and not a mirror of your main desktop?

November 24, 2009 at 3:15 pmYes…right now I currently work with a duel monitor set-up…the laptop screen plus a 24″ACD using the mini dispaly port with a dvi adapter…convergent designs have a dvi to hdmi/hd/sdi converter box…
hopefully someone will post with a firm/semifirm answer….;-}

November 24, 2009 at 3:19 pmHi Marcel,
The DVI output the same Digital Component stream that you find in SDI or HDMI (no audio).
I don’t know the specs of the Convergent-Design device (you should ask Mike or Dan in CD), but suer you have other solutions:

November 24, 2009 at 3:25 pmHi Marcel,
I’ve been having a look to the Convergent-Design nanoConnect.
It clearly states “Convert from DVI source (such as a computer) to HD/SD-SDI”.
Probably you will need just a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

November 24, 2009 at 3:58 pmas long as you get the correct signal converted to HD/SDI, just make sure the monitor you are going to is calibrated correctly from the signal it is being fed.
what model monitor are you planning on going to, and does it have a blue only mode to set up color on colorbars? just send HD color bars out of the FCP, set your black level with the pluge, the white level so it doesn’t clip any whites, and your color with blue only, and you’re set…or hire someone to correctly calibrate the monitor with professional calibration gear, colorimeter…etc…if you’re near NYC, you could hire me!

November 24, 2009 at 4:12 pmWell, here is 11 PM.
Soon I’ll switch the computer off and go to read for a while.
I have work to do but today I feel lazy:-)
No lazy, but I have to retake a project that I shot and let half edited 5 months ago.
I would rather go with something new. Is like if you would know what you gonna eat for the next few weeks: Don’t feel like eating:-)
Good night.

PS: Talk with the people of Convergent Design about the “nanoConnect”. I have never found people as nice and helpful as in that company. -

November 24, 2009 at 4:15 pm[Rafael Amador] “The DVI output the same Digital Component stream that you find in SDI or HDMI (no audio). “
This is totally incorrect.
Computer monitors and their DVI, DVI-D or Display Port outputs work at mhz levels and frame rasters that are NOT video and cannot be captured or played back as video
Output from a computers DVI source is NOT Video especially not on a MAC- it is an RGB image display sequence and cannot be able to be converted to a SDI Video Signal without some kind of Frame scanning capability.
Some HDMI devices allow for these non video signals to be played directly out on a display using DVI to HDMI conversion but even that needs to be handled by devices that allow for it.

November 24, 2009 at 4:18 pmThe AJA HA5 should do the trick. It’s a HDMI to HD-SDI converter (just buy a cheap HDMI/DVI adapter…). But it doesn’t come cheap! I’d give AJA a call and see if they think it would work.

Not from a computer display, the Aja hardware tools only support SMPTE standard video frame rates and rasters.
