Thanks Gary…that’s what I was afraid of…Gary..any way for me to do what I want?…which is to accurately monitor, while editing on a new MBP without buying an IOHD or something like it…note i’m using the express slot on the MBP for esata storage…so all I have available is the FW port.
thanks as always for sharing your knowledge.

Ah, that’s too bad. Thanks Gary.

Well, with the Express34 slot taken, and you not wanting to use the IoHD, then the only other option is the original Matrox MXO. It connects via DVI, and instead of taking the RGB signal the card usually sends, it extracts a proper YUV signal AND embedded audio….and gives you SDI, Component and Composite out…plus the ability to use a computer monitor as a pretty good HD monitoring solution.

Click on my head at the top to find the link to the review I wrote about it.

    You are absolutely right Gary.
The DVI is able of carrying the same stream that HD/SD-SDI or HDMI, but doesn’t means that does so.
I guess that the GPU will change the out going signal depending on the attached monitor.
The info is there but you need something like the Matrox to put it in order.
    Cheers,

I’m with Shane re the MXO. We used it for monitoring before we got our current system with Kona 3 and TVLogic monitor. It was a very good solution. And it works as an excellent scan converter, too.

    Sorry Marcel,
not beyond the original MXO and the IoHD are your only choices for a monitoring solution to a professional device. The BMD converter mentioned functions like a 1024 or Folsum Presenter to conform display signals to video.

But IMHO if you are going to present yourself as an Editor/Producer you will need professional level monitoring to assure that the content you produce looks as good on screen as it does in your mind.

just because the “they say so” does not mean it will work for real world situations.

    Test for yourself-ALWAYS.

    absolutely true.

I remember a certain vendor offering a certain product with all
these features and it turned out some of those features were
not doing what I needed in a high quality way, but they sure
made it sound like it did.

    Fool me once….
