HD/SD monitoring from PowerPC G5
I have Final Cut Pro 6 running on a PowerMac (PowerPC) 2.0ghz G5 with 2GB ram and two 20″ widescreen LCD monitors for editing. What is the most cost-effective way to add HD/SD monitoring to my PowerPC? I have looked at one offering from BlackMagic Designs but it seems to only support Mac Pro’s. I’m pretty sure my PowerPC uses PCI-X instead of PCI-E. I would like the playback monitoring to be syncronized with the playback in FCP. Any ideas? I don’t buying another LCD monitor for HD/SD monitoring but I’m not sure what card or breakout box to get that would be compatible with my computer.

Card would be the AJA Kona 3X. The X is for PCI-X.

You might be able to use the new AJA Io HD for monitoring and the nice thing about that is it’s an external box so when you upgrade your computer, it will go with the new computer. If you purchase an internal card, it will not move to a new PCIe computer.
I would call AJA and talk to them about it as G5’s are not specifically listed in the documentation.

There is a Black-Magic PCI-X card. Decklink Extreme HD. There is a PCI-e and PCI-X version.
There is also the AJA Kona LH…but you’ll have to look for that one used.
AND, there is the Matrox MXO, but that connects via DVI so you’ll lose one DVI port.
