HDMI or DVI Monitor Options for HD
Posted by Don Forschmitt on November 20, 2008 at 1:24 amHave a new system with the Kona LHe with Breakout box, 8 core 2.8ghz CPU. Now need a way to output to a HDMI or DVI monitor for HD monitoring.
Any favorites out there? Want to be able to set this monitor up as my main monitor. Switch between SD and HD projects. Be able to see 16×9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. Not doing broadcast, but mainly industrial applications.
Looking at AJA HI5 – MATROX MXO – Blackmagic Mini Converter Anything else I should be considering. Thanks for your help.

November 20, 2008 at 1:40 amWell, if you have the Kona, getting the BlackMagic SDI to HDMI converter for $495 will get you what you need.
WOrk great for a client monitor.

November 20, 2008 at 1:41 amYou can use a converter to go from SDI to HDMI. Both Aja and Black Magic Design make them. I’m sure that others do, as well.
With Aja, the power supply is always sold separately.

I think the real question is, why are you not using component out of the LHe?

Why? You have both Component and HD-SDI output from your Kona LHe for HD monitoring. Why the need for HDMI or DVI?
We monitor HD and SD via component out of all three of our Kona 3’s.

I understand there is Component out of various cards, but I was under the impression (maybe mistakenly) that taking the SDI signal out of these cards to DVI or HDMI was somehow a cleaner HD signal.Don Forschmidt

I actually saw this in your first post the other day Dan and was going to ask you why you were keen on HDMI or DVI, especially after buying a Kona LHe.
The SDI and component signals from your Kona card are both very good, and very close in terms of quality. Typically, neither the video material nor the monitor on which it is displayed will be so good that you’d ever see much of a difference between the two, and neither HDMI or DVI is going to be any better.
So, instead of being overly concerned about which type of signal you’re going to feed your monitor, you should just be thinking about just how good a monitor are you actually going to get. And, keep in mind, you’ll need two computer monitors as well, if you don’t already have those.

It’s a gigantic mistake to make a blanket statement like that. I think everyone’s assuming component is just as good because of how it works on a Sony BVM or a Panasonic professional plasma. Most other monitors don’t have accurate component inputs like those do. Most in fact are cheap, generic, mass produced A/D digitizers that haven’t been calibrated with scopes.
I have a Dell 24″ (I’m sure many of you do as well) and the component input on that is utter garbage. I also have a Samsung 40″ and while not as bad as the Dell, you can see a difference between component and HDMI.

that would be a no in the case of DVI, since that is only an 8bit signal.
HDMI has its own issues since some frame rates are NOT supported depending on which version of HDMI is being used (older versions do not support 24p)
