HDCam import to FCP – Multi Cam Edit
Hello,
I have a project that was shot in HDCam at 1080i 59.94 drop and was a multi cam shoot. I’d like to bring in the footage using ProRez HQ on a MacPro 266GHz with external SATA raid. System has a Kona3 card and 4GB memory. I usually work in DVCPro HD with good results but haven’t worked in ProRez or ProRez HQ. This was an 8 camera shoot and I”d like to have as many multiple streams as possible. Final output will be for broadcast in 1080i 59.94. Program is 1 & 1/2 hours.I’d like to ask advice on capture settings and workflow. Would it be best to bring in the footage at low rez and do an online session afterwards? If so, what would you recommend? At ProRez HQ I’m looking at around 180 Gigs per hour of footage. I’ll probably have 20 hours of camera footage when all is ingested.
In the past my system has been able to handle 8 streams of DVCPro HD 720p 30fps without external monitoring. (it looks like 1080i ProRez HQ is almost 3 times the size of 720p DVCPro HD so I’m guessing I can’t have that many streams in 1080i prorez HQ)

In my opinion, Prores HQ for this may be overkill. You can probabally get away with plain ole pro res (No HQ). In any case, you better have a very fast raid array to pull 8 streams.
Suggesting an “off-line” resolution really depends on your own personal needs, the expectations of your clients, and how well versed you are in the “uprez” workflow. We use “off-line rt” all the time, since we’re
regularly handling 12 camera shoots with multiple editors. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, but it works for us.Mark

Makes sense. I’d like to use ProRez rather than HQ purely for bandwidth issues. Have had problems in the past with clients accepting the time frame of off-line / on-line workflows, so the closer I can get to a workable resolution the better.When you work in lower resolutions, what format do you use to ingest the footage?

Off-line RT HD. Looks like crap, but gets the job done.

you could use something like the MXO2 to scale the incoming HD to SD (pjpeg, prores, DV25) , edit, then recapture in HD after locking the cut. however, I’d only consider this if you know you have clean continuous TC on all tapes, even if it means restriping the TC on the tapes to be sure.
