HDCAM converstion
We recently finished editing a documentary film shot in both HDV 1080i60 and
DVCPro HD 1080p30 and then edited on a DVCPro HD 1080p sequence in Final Cut
Pro. We’re getting ready to move the film onto HDCAM tape and are getting contradictory information about how to export the film. Some places are saying we need to export in ProRe HQ. Others say Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2. Still others say self contained quick time movie with the same settings as our sequence.Can someone help us sort out the noise here? The goal, obviously, is the highest quality tape and we’d hate to export it in the wrong format. Thanks

How are you going to “move” the project? You have the deck and capture card in your system or? Which card/system are you going to use?
I’d not recompress the video to another format. Most capture cards can take the DVCPRO sequence you have and send it out uncompressed to the HDCAM deck in real time. Kona cards can do this I know…

Thanks for trying to help us out. No, we’re not moving this ourselves. We’re taking the file to a post house for that. The problem is that each of the three post houses I spoke with gave us different advice for exporting – ProRes, keeping the file as is and Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2. Since these houses are new to us, we suspect we need to know a bit more before going in next week.

I’d not recompress as any recompression will lose quality, even if small. So move the whole project to the place that can use the format that you edited in.
