  • HDCAM 1080i 59.94 project needs to deliver 30p

Posted by Brian Ford on May 19, 2009 at 6:39 pm

I have a project I am starting tomorrow that was shot HDCAM 1080i 59.94 and the final product is for web delivery and needs to be progressive. The plan all along was for it to shoot 1080p24, but that changed without any communication on how it would impact the entire process and final delivery.

I need the best workflow for this to make sure I can provide them a 1080 progressive H264 file. Any help with sequence presets and compressor presets are much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Edit normally, then throw a DE-INTERLACE filter on all of it? That’s my suggestion to try. 1080i59.94 is 29.97fps. 1080i30 is also 29.97fps, the only difference is the interlacing.

What codec are you editing in?

That was my initial thought, but I wanted to make sure I this wasn’t going to burn me since the turnaround is so quick. Final product needs to be uploaded by Friday at noon. Thanks for your quick response Shane.

We are capturing ProRes and we will online the final sequence at ProRes HQ. Does the codec make a difference? Thanks.

No, but the plug in I was going to recommend works in 8 bit space only.

Don’t use the FCP deinterlace filter. It sucks.

What I woudl do is edit/finish interlaced, then use Compressor’s deinterlace function that’s found in the Frame Controls tab (not the one in the Filters tab). Make sure to set it to best.

This will then make a deinterlaced h264 provided that you have setup an h264 preset in Compressor.

Out of curiosity, which plugin were you going to suggest? If you feel like it might yield better results I would definitely like to hear about it. Thanks.

In all honesty, Compressor never ceased to impress me. Yes, you need to know what buttons to push, but once that is figured out, I think it does a very nice job for free.

The plug in I was going to suggest is revisions Fields Kit. It is truly a kick butt deinterlacer.
