  • HD show & respecting FCP’s title/action-safe overlays…

Posted by Phil Muri on December 18, 2008 at 6:43 am

    Howdy Cowpokes,

I am delivering my program in its native DVCPRO HD 720p60. It is destined to be broadcast in HD and SD. What if any purpose do the FCP overlays for title/action-safe serve… and are they at all reliable or is there a great variation?
Fundamental rookie question: does a 1080i broadcast get cropped on the viewer’s end? Presuming that overscan is negligible for HD, do the overlays serve merely as guides for title/action-safe for non-digital display sources in NTSC? Or is overscan once more not an issue if the network broadcasts the down-converted program in anamorphic?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shine on this topic,

    -Phil

Overscan still exists in HD…HD monitors do still have plastic or metal that overlaps the actual screen. So it would be wise to observe the title and action safe areas.

And yes, FCPs guides are reliable.

Those are your true guides for Action and Title Safe, even in HD. We’ve been delivering HD programming to networks for four years and we rely on those guides to ensure all our graphics are proper for broadcast. Never had anything kicked back, they are very reliable.

This season of my show is in HD and I have been creating my titles and lower thirds to stay within 4×3 title safe. This is because the show will be repackaged for international distribution and the titles will need to be within 14×9 title safe which is essentially 4×3. I downloaded Andy Mees (sp?) title safe generator to make sure my titles were safe. (You can search the Cow to find it the link.) I highly recommend you check with your client as to what they want for title safe.

Our facility has shot and edited several seasons in HD, but we have only delivered in SD (letterbox) so far. All titles are within FCP 16 x 9 title safe. We are now concerned that when we finally deliver our previous seasons and future ones in HD that some stations may crop the image for those viewers that still have 4×3 monitors (me included for now) and some supers / titles may come seriously close to video safe and not correctly displayed on 4×3 monitors. So far I have seen a few stations in our area (thru Dish Network) that have supers half cropped off of the screen, a local PBS station being one of them. Has anyone else come across this. I have seen some sporting events in HD with supers/ and scores that seem to be in 4×3 title safe instead of 16×9 title safe. We use the Kona 3 to down convert to letterbox. If we switch the setting from letterbox to crop it does cut titles in half. Does anyone else out there use this in their practice? Just curious..
