  • HD monitoring on the MB Extreme: recommendations?

Posted by Adam Levine on April 4, 2006 at 9:27 pm

The equipment on my new suite is slowly trickling in:

    G5 Quad
    4.5 GB RAM
    2.4 TB Array
    MB Extreme

But I still haven’t decided on a monitor for the MBE DVI-D port. Since I can’t afford a real HD reference monitor, I’ve decided on either:

    1. Apple 30″ LCD
    2. Panasonic 42″ “Pro” Series Plasma with DVI-D option (there’s even an SDI-HD option for this puppy) The model is the TH-42PHD8UK.

Price is more or less the same. I think I’d like the former more, and the clients would like the latter.

    Any thoughts?

    Adam,

Sounds like a nearly identical rig that I just set-up. I, too, am still undecided on a DVI monitor.

Some other models that have gotten good comments on the IMUG list are:

    – Syntax Olevia 37″ LCD LT37HVS ($1500 at Target)
    – Sceptre X37SV-Naga LCD/TV w/1920×1080 resolution ($1700) – they also make a 42″
    – Westinghouse LVM-37W1 37″ LCD TV/Monitor

Just remember, you won’t see any interlacing/field issues on an LCD, so unless you’re only working with progressive material, you’ll want to have some sort of smaller NTSC CRT to double check things (downconverted to SD).

Hope this helps, and let us know what you end up buying.

Thanks or the info. I’m trying to stay away from consumer-level LCDs (other than the Apple 30″), as the angle of viewing is very poor and the black levels are terrible from what I’ve seen. One exception seems to be the Sharp Aquos line, which has an excellent picture. I will check out the ones you mentioned, thanks.

    Hi Adam

We use a 37″ Panasonic plasma in one suite, and Dell 24″ in the others. The contrast and saturation is amazing on the Plasma, but it isn’t quite as sharp as the LCDs because they are pixel mapped one for one. I think there is a slight video processing delay through the plasma that I don’t notice with the LCDs so we keep a crt handy to be sure of sync.

Our main editor prefers the plasma, I like the Dell so I can see any noise…clients love the plasma, and we don’t want them to see the noise 😉

So do you think that the combo of the plasma for the client along with a down-rezzed picture on my Sony PVM-20L2 CRT will cover me?

Also, which Panasonic do you have. Is it their “Pro” line?

    Hi

    We have the TH37PHD-8UK.

I find monitoring to be a very personal issue so I wouldn’t want to second guess what will work for you, but it works for us.

Adam I have the nearly the exact setup as you.

We’re using the Dell 24″ LCD on our MBE DVI and a sony BVM-20F1U CRT
    on SD-SDI.

    We’re “satisfied”

I’m looking into getting a Sony PVM-20L5/1 CRT for HD though.

speaking of which, steve wargo mentioned in the HD forum that
http://www.samysdv.com (310-450-4365) is advertising some of those
sony HD crt’s right now if your interested in an HD CRT without
    busting the bank.

If you buy the Apple 30″ LCD, get one of the “new” ones. Apple has started shipping a new rev with screen with improved specs.

If one wanted a tube TV, perhaps to use as a second monitor, why not use a Sony XBR consumer type tube? A good technician could probably tweak it so it’s close to a broadcast monitor.

I’m actually a HUGE fan of the 36″ Sony XBR tube, it’s what I have in my living room. 1080 lines and just unbelievable picture with a quality HD signal pumped through it (still a problem, of course). The problem for the studio is that it is just a massive space killer. The thing is 2 feet deep
