HD looks like crap on youtube – what am I doing wrong?
hey folks,
I’m trying to send an HD video from final cut to youtube and although it looks beautiful when exported, when it’s published on youtube it looks like crap.
I sent it on 3 ways: mp4 with bitrate 1800, mp4 with bitrate 5000 and .mov h.264 with medium quality. Their frame size is 640×360 on all cases. But like I said, it loses a lot of quality on youtube. What’s stranger is, when I sent something shot on SD video, it looked great! Can anybody please send me a light? Thanks!

if you’re using those same settings for the SD video you upload, you’re giving the SD video roughly 4 times more bitrate than the HD vid. Try upping your bitrate to 10k or more, and make sure you click the watch in high quality button below your video in youtube. We put a slug at the beginning of all our youtube vids to remind people to watch in HQ.

Also, if you upload a large file (close to the 1 gig limit) it will take quite a while for the “Watch in HQ” option to show up. Give it at least a day.
Experiment some more, trying to get the highest bitrate possible while keeping the file size under 1 gig.
