HD in After Effects 7
I been sifting through the forums for half an hour and my heads about to explode.
and I’m now more confused than when i started lol
I’m such a technophobe its untrue.
My problem is this:
I make little visual effects videos using After Effects.
My cam exploded so I had to buy a new one.
I have gone for the JVC GZ-HD7, since it has a hard drive and records in HD.
Since I’ve got a few short films written, I thought it might be nice to record them onto great quality picture and then I might send them off to a few film festivals and see if anything happens.
NOW my problem.
The HD files that are saved are .TOD files.
After Effects NOR Premiere will accept them.
I finally figured out how to convert them but I’m not too sure what format to convert them to so as not to degrade the footage.
I tried converting to .TPD but that wont work in either program either 🙁
Please Help Meeee before I throw the thing up the wall lol
Sorry if its already explained somewhere but all the different format types are confusing me more. -

To not lose any quality, you need to convert them to uncompressed video, or to format using a lossless compression codec.
Some examples of lossless compression are:
– Quicktime with Animation Compression
– Windows AVI with HuffYUV codec
– Windows AVI with Camtasia’s video capture codecThere are a lot more – and they each serve a different purpose, and do better compression in different scenarios.
You will need lots of drive space, so expect that.

The codecs Aharon mentioned will work and are probaby a good start. Whatever choice you make, be prepared to have some very large files on your hands that are pretty resource-intensive.
Also, you should be warned (if you weren’t already aware of it) that the camera you purchased uses the MPEG-2 codec. They aren’t exactly lying when they say it records HD (it DOES record 1920×1080) but MPEG-2 is not HD quality by any stretch of the imagination. Because your video will already be somewhat hobbled by this extremely lossy codec, you need to be careful about recompressing the file. As such, using a lossless codec like Uncompressed or Animation codec are a good bet to preserve as much detail as possible.

Aharon, where can I learn more about codecs and formats, I always get confused with this stuff.
Is it wrong to output H.264 from AE to bring into FCP? (my edited output would be an H.264 vid for the web).

I don’t want to mislead you – it is about video for the web. However, stuff like formats and codecs are a part of web video and any other digital video. The difference is that when you are targeting the web, you are using lossy codecs, whereas when you are targeting broadcast, you are (hopefully) using losless compression. But again, Formats, Codecs, data rate, keyframes – all are a part of the process of making video.
But take a look at the TOC and decide if the DVD is right for you.
