I have not been able to convert HD to SD satisfactorily to edit in FCP. I use MPG Streamclip with the following settings:

    Compression: Apple DV PAL
    Quality: 100%
Frame Size : 720×576 (DV PAL)
    Interlaced scaling: On

The problem is slight strobing when the subject moves in the frame, which is very disconcerting. If I turn the Interlaced scaling off then I can’t view the movie on an SD monitor.

I would greatly appreciate help as it is driving me mad.

I have not problems when I am working in HD and the results are great.

Why don’t you edit in HD, then downconvert for delivery if necessary.

Yes, I have done it that way in the past but then Compressor takes a long time to prepare the files for DVD SP, especially for a 45 min programme.

Where as if I convert it to DV PAL frmat first then a 45 min long programme takes only 15-20 min to prepare files for the DVD SP. So, that seemd sensible.

I’m not sure, if I understand correctly. If you turn interlaced scaling to off, results in a file that can’t be played? Or is the quality not good?

You could try to resize and convert to a different codec, like Photo-Jpeg at 90% (or higher), which produces quite good results.
