I have a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 with 10.5gb ram that I have been using for editing. I just recently started doing HD footage and it’s been running smooth. I have a 3 camera shoot that I synced up and want to use the multicam feature in FCP to edit. It freezes about every 4 seconds and can’t even preview the multiclip all the way. I have a internal 1tb scratch disk.

My question is, is it time for a upgrade or is there something I can do to this box to get a little more life out of it?

    Thanks.

Your hard drive is fastest enough to maintain the data rate of 3 HD streams. You’ll need a raid.

How much throughput do you need? That depends on codec and frame size.

With only 2 internal drive bays, should I setup a raid using my primary disk?

The footage I’m using is AVCHD 1440×1080 that was decompressed to Pro Res 422. Could the change to Pro Res be too much for this specific system?

    I’m wanting a final compression of 720p 30fps.
