HD Deliverables and Drop vs Non-Drop TC dilemma
I’m about to deliver a 45 minutes long show for a US broadcaster They usually require 1080p23.98 masters and then convert for broadcast to 1080i59.94. The material I was working with however was shot (with Sony XD CAM) at 30p. I was editing in FCP using 1080p30pVBR settings. Creating a 59.94i broadcast master won’t be an issue and the network will accept it but since they usually deal with 23.98 there is no mention in their specs whether the time code should be drop or non-drop. I can be up to 30 seconds under so it’s not a huge issue but I still would like to know how should I measure the length of my sequence if I were shooting for the EXACT 45min.

Unless specifically stated, I always delivered drop frame. That way I had my length correct, regardless of length of program.

On Final Cut’s Timeline:
Mark an IN-point at the first frame of the program and an OUT-point after the last frame of the program.
The “duration” shown will be the exact program length.
DF and NDF TC have no effect on the program length.
They are simply a “counting system.”
