I’ve rendered out these 1080p 24fps clips and they don’t look right. I’d appreciate someone taking a quick look and letting me know what’s wrong: https://vimeo.com/36229236

For instance, notice at 16 seconds into the video the slow mo effect. Sometimes I drop the shutter speed as low as 1/30th of a second due to the extreme low light, but I wouldn’t think that would cause this effect.

Settings were MainConcept mp4/Internet HD720p, then I customized by changing the frame rate from 29.970 to 23.976. I also selected “use deblocking filter” and ran a constant 20,0000 bit rate. On the project tab, I moved Video Rendering Quality to best.

Why would Vegas default to 29.970 when matching media properties shows I have 23.976fps footage.

I’ll try 29.970 and see what happens.

    Thanks,

    Rendered at 30fps and it’s smooth: https://vimeo.com/36275332

Is this HDV footage? I’m guessing that your camera is delivering the 24p as 29.97 telecine which is why Vegas only sees 29.97. I would also guess that the way that your camera is telecining the footage is different from the way that Vegas does reverse telecine (i.e., the pulldown method is different) which is why it looks worse when Vegas tries to make 24p out of it. Sony has this problem with their own cameras and one of the reasons I originally purchased CineForm is because it had the ability to correctly reverse telecine Sony’s CINEFRAME24 format back into true 23.976fps.

    It’s MOVs from a Canon T2i DSLR.

When I open a new project in Vegas and match the media settings it shows it is “HD 1080-24p (1920×1080, 23.976 fps)”. That matches my camera settings.

But, I can drop a sample clip in the timeline and select render as internet 720p and Vegas wants to render it as “29.970 (NTSC)”.

It’s my understanding that the t2i uses its own version of AVC/H.264

Just did an interesting experiment. I rendered out one particular clip as 23.976 (IVTC Film) again and the footage was not smooth.

Then, I changed the setting to 24 (Film) and it was smooth.

Hmmm…. that’s odd. My daughter has a T2i, I should ask her to borrow it and do some experiments. I’ve never shot video with it myself. Maybe it really is shooting 24fps instead of 23.976?
