OK so I’m learning the realities or what to expect and what not to expect with my current video/computer hardware. I’m still disappointed with the results and I can’t help but feeling that somewhere I’m making errors or coding things incorrectly. I apologize for asking this question in the FCP forum but I didn’t see a FCE forum, so here goes.

I have a Canon HV30 camcorder. It shoots very good quality video in HD in 16:9. I import the footage from the tape in FCE using the “HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60” Codec. In FCE, the footage looks incredible. It’s resolution and clarity look flawless. When I export to quicktime (.mov)ie I see a ton of the horizontal lines with any motion in my footage. I’m guessing that this is interlacing and that quicktime drops certain fields for playback and editing efficiency.

When I import this video file into my DVD application, the interlacing is better, but the video quality on the DVD still shows some resolution issues, with some jagged lines, vibrating patterns, and still some interlacing.

Any thoughts? FCE has the deinterlacing and flicker filters. Do people recommend using them for all footage? I understand that I don’t have a bluray burner, so I’m going from HD to a standard definition DVD. It just seems like my DVDs are light years behind the quality of the commercial quality DVDs that the studios produce. Are there other techniques or settings I’m missing? I don’t expect hollywood quality but something a little closer to my original video would be acceptable.

I don’t use FCE, but doesn’t it allow you to edit HDV natively? I’d think that might look better. There’s a big hit in quality when you transcode to the AIC codec.

Thanks Jerry for your reply. Yes, editing HDV in FCE is not the problem. I’m importing and editing in HDV. The question or workflow I’m trying to get to is how to achieve the best results…

Output and finished product is what I’m looking for. I’m wondering what Apple recommends?

    Thanks,
    Bob
