HD broadcast monitor (Apple cinema display) not working HELP!
Posted by Robin on October 3, 2006 at 8:45 pmHello everyone
My multibridge extreme system has suddenly stopped working.
FCP just crashed on me and when I rebooted the Cinema Display I have (23″) as a broadcast monitor is just black. Nothing. I’ve checked all the cables, but they are all connected. Have rebooted, updated everything (OSX, Blackmagic drivers etc.) but nothing fixes it.
Is there a way of re-installing the firmware on the multibridge?
Any ideas?
I’m tearing my hair out – help very much appreciated!

October 4, 2006 at 1:44 amHi Robin,
You mentioned that you only see black on your Cinema display when running Final Cut Pro, subsequent to the crash and restart. When you start up your G5 or Mac Pro, does the Mac OS X desktop appear on your Cinema display? If so, then Multibridge is working and I suspect the preferences in Final Cut Pro have become corrupt and need to be deleted to overcome the problem.
If the Mac OS X desktop does not appear at startup, would you please open the DeckLink PrefPane (in System Preferences) and tell me what it says next to the text “Preference settings for your….” If it shows “DeckLink” rather than “Multibridge Extreme”, then the Mac is not seeing the Multibridge Extreme. Please shut down the Mac and ensure that the thumb-lock screws for the PCI Express cable are tight at both ends where they connect with the Mac and the Multibridge. Ensure the Multibridge Extreme is powered on and then start up the Mac. Does the DeckLink PrefPane now report the presence of the Multibridge Extreme?

The Mac OS X desktop does NOT appear on your Cinema display.
In the DeckLink PrefPane (in System Preferences) next to the text “Preference settings for your….” It shows “Multibridge Extreme”, I have already shut down the Mac and ensured that the thumb-lock screws for the PCI Express cable are tight at both ends where they connect with the Mac and the Multibridge.
This morning I tried powering up the system again and the multibridge started making a continuous clicking sound through the speakers. The decklink was already making a loud click when it powered up – for instance when the computer was ‘woken’ after being asleep.
Do I need a replacement box? I’m in the middle of a critical edit, and this is a real problem for me.

October 4, 2006 at 8:40 pmI seem to have solved the monitor problem. I reinstalled OS X which forced me to reinstall the firmware for the MBX.
There doesn’t seem to be any other way to re-install the firmware that I have found so far. Quite a major issue, as this has taken me 2 days to fix so far.
Problem now is that FCP doesn’t seem to have the appropriate codec to play back my HDV footage.
Somehow in the process the codec seems to have gone missing.
I’ve decided to reinstall FCP to see if that will remedy the situation.
If anyone knows of a quick way to solve this codec problem, please let me know.

“Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.”

Many people read this forum, without letting anybody know about it…
I’m glad a 5.1 reinstall fixed your problem. I’m in control of a total of 8 machines, 7 of which are stuck on 5.0 (some even on 4.5), and one new machine on 5.1. I’ve sent my disks for the 7 5.1 upgrades 6 weeks ago. The ONLY legal distributor for Apple in South Africa, Core, can not even give me an ETA for the upgrades. The 5.1 system is supposed to feed the other systems work, but they can not open it’s projects. And don’t believe for a second that XML works as it should to downgrade projects. That’s the kind of loyalty an FCP user(From version 2) can expect from Apple today.
Talk about talking to myself… I don’t really expect an answer on that little tidbit – just had to throw it in there.
Best

October 6, 2006 at 12:34 pmHa ha! Thanks Francois! Was just a little joke at the ludicrous number of posts I have made to my own thread!
Can you not buy 5.1 as a download? Or if you have one already, then purchase licenses for the other machines? You’ve probably explored these avenues already.
Whereabouts are you in SA? I was shooting in Jo’burg last summer.
Thanks for the response and good luck with the upgrades.
This problem has cost me about 4 days, but finally everything seems to be working, and the audio ‘pop’ or click that used to come up when I started up, or woke up the G5 seems to have miraculously gone too. Wierd what happens as a side-effect when you fix one problem.
Best wishes
