  • HD animation to NTSC SD –Questions??? I’m confused

I’ve created a short animated project that I’m transferring to a DVD. I want the DVD to screen correctly on an old fashion television (not just an LCD monitor. ) My FCP file is built from various Quicktime files that were built in AE and Motion from still images created in Photoshop. The FCP sequence is 1920 x 1080 with a frame rate of 23.976. Pixels are square and it is progressive. Animation codec.

When I transfer a quicktime movie out of it and import that movie to DVDSP and create a DVD, it plays fine from my Blu-Ray video player into my LCD monitor, but if I play it on a a regular television from a standard DVD player, the image exists but it is full of horiszontal lines. (Sound is fine.) What do I need to do to make it all work out right?

[ellen osborne] “the image exists but it is full of horiszontal lines”

do you mean black bars top and bottom when played on a 4:3 tv?

    thats how it should be.

I mean lines all through the image. Maybe some kind of interlacing thing?

Yes, that’s interlacing. Standard CRT’s and all standard definition video is interlaced, Lower Field First.

HD is Upper Field First. You’re seeing a reverse interlace in your footage.

You need to create an SD version of your file in Compressor using any standard DVD Preset. Compressor will create a very clean SD version of your file.

Thank you. That sounds simple enough. Do I need to change the frame rate for any reason?
