[Andreas Karoliussen] “Ive always thought that firewire was a “pure” copy – of whats on your tape. “

As a Data transfer that is correct- but we are talking about a VIDEO signal – and that is a gravely different beast.

“with SD Iv tried the solutions: dvcpro50 captured firewire, and SDI to uncompressed 10bit. And Ive used the SDI workflow for a long time. pleased to see that I was “right”.”

That was SD, with a mildly compressed signal at DV 50 and NO pixel aspect ratio issues.

HD is a Totally different beast. DV50 is about a 3:1 compression over the baseband signal.
720 DVCPROHD is about 10:1 and HDV is about 30:1 in size from the original 10bit video stream.

The more you compress the more complicated the decompression works- you are now working with content that is at higher compression ratios than your previously existing workflow.

With HD you have to rethink everything in your workflow

“I think you misunderstand me when I say you need an HD monitor. It’s not a ‘wishlist’ requirement, it’s a necessity for dealing with broadcast HD”

What are the common HD monitors post-production use for this? And what kind of specifications do they need? Does anyone have any examples of a typical monitor you’ll need for this work?

    Thank you

you are lucky, the list is short for dual link capable monitoring

they are in my order of Preference:

    Cine-tal,
    Astro
    Sony,
    Barco,
    E-cinema

While there are a couple of others on the market that support dual link / 4:4:4 signals these are the most common ones in use on the market.

    No I am not,
(and I have not heard of them either – which says a lot)

when it comes to monitors, it is an issue for me to work with aNY tools that are not proven in the marketplace
I included only those monitors that I have a full working knowledge of and trust that they will do the job as needed. I am not ever looking for the cheapest tool, I want the best tool for the job that will work day in and day out without problems.
