My guess is you are confusing HDcam SR delivery with 4:4:4 RGB they are not the same thing.
You are going to deal with YUV to RGB issues, Gamma issues and only 8bit master and compression artifacts.
Your Decklink SD will not do HD, and the decklink products have a cautionary past working in a dual link 4:4:4 RGB content.

NO there is not any kind of firewire transfer in a 4:4:4 world.
Video Cards are required for monitoring, capture and layoff to tape via the 2 bonded HDSDI channels
Storage is the most important thing to think about FW does not do it here either- fibre or SAS minimum.

The source tapes are DVCProHD, so I think the suggestion was to capture firewire – which is the intelligent way to go IMO. Then lay off the final project to HDCAM SR which of course will require a card.

Nope..
but think what you are saying, that you are going to “try” and take horizontally compressed 4:2:2 content in a “thin raster” ( not full frame) and try and convert that to 4:4:4? – bad idea.
you want the best quality possible – DO NOT CAPTURE via FW – capture the best signal possible over HDSDI or Comp.
Camera and Decks are engineered to convert that compressed content at the highest quality when it is output back out over Baseband (HDSDI)- the tools are designed to give you the best picture at the highest quality.
Firewire transfer bypass all of this part of the design and force you to rely on someone that was more interested in the post part than the picture part to then decode your image- you get speed but not necessarily the same quality.

The Quad is the ONLY G5 to have PCIe slots. If you have any other G5, you have PCI-X.

I think you misunderstand me when I say you need an HD monitor. It’s not a ‘wishlist’ requirement, it’s a necessity for dealing with broadcast HD. Without it, you cannot view the entire raster at full quality of your video/commercial, so will be unable to check it for quality/artifacts or even interlace if required. The canvas view on the computer is unacceptable and unable to show this – and field issues which will turn up broadcast are the biggest single technical issue you may have to deal with.
A couple of thousand dollars for a monitor in a 4 machine setup with XSAN should always be spent. If your boss cannot see the requirement for this, he should not offer to do work he cannot deliver – since you cannot ‘QC’ your work before delivery without one. Using an SD monitor will not show you every line, so can easily hide digital errors in video – this has happen in the past to me when forced to do this in the field.
Appreciate your situation – unfortunately it’s one I come across all too often with companies that move into broadcast and HD.

Ive always thought that firewire was a “pure” copy – of whats on your tape.
with SD Iv tried the solutions: dvcpro50 captured firewire, and SDI to uncompressed 10bit. And Ive used the SDI workflow for a long time. pleased to see that I was “right”.
When it comes to my HD project the solution has been a plunge:
my boss has now payed for:
New mac pro 2x 3,2 quad
nvida 8800GT512
8gb ram
3x1tb seagateserver grade es2 sata 32mb 8,5ms
aja Kona Lhe hd/sd card
and I have an HD monitor – however it was no good until i have the hd card.Thank you guys for all your help and opinions!
