    Hi,

We are putting together a DVCPRO HD system for local events and documentary work. We’re on a pretty tight budget so we won’t be buying a VTR.

We’ll be shooting with the upcoming HVX200 from panasonic onto P2 and archiving HD while delivering SD DVDs until HD DVD arrives.

I was looking at picking up the Kona LH for monitoring to our HD monitor and IO capability.

Most importantly though, I was really wondering about the hardware acceleration for editing DVCPRO HD/DVCPRO 50. Will it appreciably speed up processing and rendering?

We also do effects stuff with combustion and after affects and I was wondering what the acceleration with those apps is like. Will the Kona actually eliminate the need for renders or just speed renders up…or is it just a monitoring option?

We’ll be using it on a 2003 G5 with PCIX and 8gigs of RAM. Havn’t settled on a storage solution yet, but probably something like a Huge scsi320 array.

    Thanks for any input,

    David Garcia

Kona does nothing for any other apps but FCP as far as rendering speed. You do get realtime preview with After Effects to your external monitor.

The hardware accleration helps you do more filters and effects in realtime preview, but you will still need to render everything out before mastering to tape. I edit DVCPro HD all day, pretty much everyday anymore and the Kona line, along with AJA’s legendary tech support, are second to none.
