hardware/software requirements for P2 card

I have been using FC Pro 5.1.4 for several years to edit mini-DV tapes from our Sony A1U. I’m a biologist and not exactly FC savvy but I’ve managed to produce natural history footage for the North American Bear Center (https://www.bear.org). I have a procedure that works for me and I haven’t strayed much from it.

We recently purchased a Panasonic HXP170 with P2 cards. I like the camera and the P2 card concept but I’m struggling with the learning curve. I’m able to download a file directly from the camera into FC Pro – but it comes in as one huge file rather that clips.

We knew when we purchased the camera that our computer hardware/software setup was not ideal – but I’m looking for guidance on what I need to upgrade to make this all work smoothly.

I’m currently running:

Mac OS X
Version 10.4.11
Processor 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory 6.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What procedure are you using to off-load the P2 cards? We do it by of-loading the P2 to a hard drive (actually 3 so we have backups). The files are copied to our RAID array then we use Log & Transfer to injest the files in FCP. Before upgrading to FCP6 we used FCP5.1.4 to do the same. It didn’t use log & transfer to bring in P2 media. Instead, in the Import menu I believe there’s a choice for P2. I’m not at the office and it’s been a while since I used FCP5 with P2 so I apologize for not being more exact.

Thank you for your reply.

I have been downloading the P2 footage via firewire directly from the camera into FCP. It’s quick and dirty but not a long-term solution. I just received new P2 e-series cards and will soon be inundated with footage to download to free those cards up.

Your email has given me the courage to fire up an older notebook with a PCMCIA slot to see if I can download via it to a hard drive and import as you suggest. Can you recommend software to use?
