Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Hard drive capture / rendering question

  • Hard drive capture / rendering question

I have seen a couple of posts regarding hard drive configurations. What I cannot find is what potential problems could happen if it is not the optimum set-up. I’m using Movie Studio Platinum 9.

Desired DVD creation workflow: Capture and edit on computer A, render to external drive, move external drive to Computer B to drop mpg2 and AC-3 files into DVDA Studio and burn.

Main editing computer A is a laptop that seems to be doing fine with Vegas (but has a malfunctioning DVD burner). I have a brand new external 7200 RPM 750g hard drive, Firewire/HS USB 2.0/eSATA. The only connection that will work with both computers is USB, and I want to capture directly to the external drive. I have to use USB because the camera will be using the only Firewire port, and the other computer doesn’t have one at all.

Are there potential serious problems / errors using USB for capturing and rendering, or will it just take longer?

Sorry for the long post but I figured it was best to be detailed.

    Thanks,
    Christa Watkins

If it’s USB2, you’re probably OK. Firewire cards are relatively cheap, and if you only have one port, you can get a Firewire Hub/repeater to multiply that. I use a Belkin 6-Port FireWire-400 Hub on my Sony laptop and capture two cameras directly to an external Firewire disk drive.

Yes, they are all USB2. I think I’m just going to hang in there till I can get a new system built but it’s nice to know I have options. I wasn’t even aware of the repeaters. Thanks for your reply.

My Vegas 9 will not recognize a USB 2800 capture device, even though Windows Movie Maker sees it right away. I can capture from a firewire cam but not this USB device, which I need to capture from VCR. How can I make it happen? Thanks.

Well I see by your FAQ that you do not support USB so I guess that abnswers my question.
