I’m running Vegas 8.0c on XP via Boot Camp on a big fat Mac. I’m experiencing a lot of hanging, extreme slowness and crashing in Vegas and I finally noticed that Vegas processes don’t seem to be quitting as they should. For example, if I have two instances of Vegas running and quit one, the one left running will run very slow and hang. When I open the Windows task manager, I will see two “vegas80.exe” in the list instead of one. Sometimes I can kill one in the task manager and that fixes things, but often I have to reboot. I have also had it happen where I go to shut down and the shut down will hang and a message will appear showing me that “pan/crop” is still running even though I have exited Vegas.

Has anyone else had anything like this happen and are there any suggestions? (Of course, I have Vegas 9 on order and will be thrilled if the new version solves the problem.)

Sometimes Vegas will not unload properly because it can’t shutdown the audio interface. Make sure you have the latest XP drivers for your Mac audio card (if that’s even possible???)

Yeah, thanks for your thought, John. I guess I will go back to hoping Vegas 9 behaves better.

Actually, it’s not a matter of Vegas “behaving” better. On Windows, I would tell people to update their audio drivers and the behavior usually stops proving that it as an audio driver problem, not a Vegas problem. I would not be surprised if Vegas 9 didn’t behave exactly the same way because you haven’t solved the audio driver problem.

This is more an issue of running Windows on non-supported hardware. When I build a PC, after installing the OS the very next thing I do is install the chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer which does things like tell the PC how to talk to the sound chip. Did you do you do this after installing XP with bootcamp? I’ve never used bootcamp so I don’t know but how do you get XP chipset drivers from Apple?

Our IT support people did the install for me, so I will ask them about the chipset driver step. Thanks much.

    followup:
John, your idea to update the audio driver for xp in bootcamp really made a difference. Thanks so much.

In case anyone else is having hanging and crashing with boot camp, this is where you can download the latest audio driver:

Excellent! I’m glad that was it and you were able to get updated drivers. Thanks for posting back and letting other know the solution too.
