  • H.264 mov files from Canon 5D Mark II running at incorrect speed?

Premiere Pro recognises 25fps from a Canon 5D mark II as 2.5fps, yet, the same files are being correctly Imported into Premiere Elements as 25fps and can be edited or transcoded uncompressed back into Pro at that speed and can be edited.
    Is there a solution?

Are you using a 25fps sequence?
Since there is not a Canon sequence preset, you would be working in another 25fps format sequence.

Have you tried rendering a portion of the sequence to see if it plays normally?
Since Canon uses pretty high bandwidth files, smooth playback in Premiere Pro without a serious GPU may be asking a lot.

I import 7d files, which may be the same as the 5d. They do not play back smoothly to say the least, but they look fine once rendered either on the sequence or in the output format.

Scroll down to the bottom of this blog entry to see some shots from our 7d. Granted we shoot at 30fps, but as I said, aside form the choppy playback they look ok once rendered.

I know in FCP people tend to transcode to ProRes. We have no such thing native in Premiere unless you buy a Cineform or Matrox codec, or capture into an intermediary codec. Have not yet tried capturing into the Matrox I-frame codec but that task is on the to do list.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Mike,
After the Firmware Upgrade to 2.0.4 we in PAL land had the opportunity to video in the 5D Mark II @25fps and the project setting was PAL 25fps. When Imported into the timeline the FPS was 2.5 not 25 fps as expected . Now, when the camera ran at 30fps Premiere Pro accepted it as 30fps,(ie., before the Firmware upgrade) but, not now . It shows it as 2.99 or 3.0 fps ? And 25fps as 2.5fps ? The camera has been checked by Canon and is operating to specifications.
The clips on the timeline @30fps after rendering were quite manageable and easily edited.
Oddly enough the same Imported clips Imported into Adobe’s amateur product Premiere Elements are shown as 25 fps and after rendering & editing play smoothly.
The Premiere Elements timeline can even be exported as an uncompressed file back into Premiere Pro ( this is a superior product) for final editing and Export, But, I do not want the hassle? I have unistalled & reinstalled Premiere twice to no avail ?

Ps. The Canon 7D would be similar to the 5D mark II except the sensor is full 35mm frame putting out a H.264 MOV file and a 3sec clip is massive at about 25mb give or take , the images and video is stunning.
