  • h264 exports out of sync, but only on some computers (?!?)

    Hi all –

I have edited a project using footage captured directly to my hard drive, via FCP, from a PS2 camera as DVCPro 720p, 23.98, 960×720. I’m exporting the sequences using QT conversion, h264, 1280 x 720. I’m using FCP 5.0.4

The problem is that my client (in another state) reports the video and audio out of sync. I do not have this problem, and neither do several other testers. I did find one machine, however, a Mac running QT, that had the same sync issue.

    After reading this thread:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/964105#975407

I decided to export the sequences on my desktop pre-Intel Mac, so there would be no conflict between FCP 5.0.4 and the Intel chip. I also first exported a self-contained QT file using current settings, then used those files to export the h264 compressed files. With this export, I had no sync problems on any machine including the one that showed it before. But the client STILL reports a sync problem, though less severe…

Does anyone have any ideas about how this could be happening? I mean, we’re talking about the exact same file playing in sync on most computers, but not on my clients computers.

    thanks
    Rich

Do you know what kind of computer your client has?

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s either 1) too old to handle h264 properly or 2) a PC.

Try sending them some good old Sorenson quicktimes if nothing seems to work for them.

    Thanks Aaron.

I don’t know, but almost assuredly a PC. But both my client and the tech guys at his firm reported the sync issue, and I doubt the tech guys have old machines. Also, I did see the sync problem on a friend’s Mac after my first export – although the same machine had no problems after I re-exported on my older machine from the self-contained file.

Anyway, how do I export using the Sorenson codec? I’m not finding it.

The problem is they want to post to youtube, which prefers h264, mpeg2, or mpeg4. I’m going to send them mpeg4, but will also send Sorenson if I can work that out.

    thanks

oh, try some of the mpeg4 (quicktime 6 compatible) presets in Compressor. maybe that’ll solve the problem.

    Those PC users. sheesh!
