Personally I’ve toyed with both importing the Quicktime files directly from my Folder as well as an AMA link to the QTs then Transcoding within Avid. For me, up to this point its same difference and I’ve begun to just use the AMA method since I can organize and rename right out of the gate.

I do a lot of my work self-contained as shooter/editor. However, I do have something coming up that MAY have to be done from Offline -> Online and was curious about the offline workflow in MC 5.5 in how I should handle my 5D footage, is one method of ingest better than other to prep for online? Is it 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other??

Never done an Offline with 5D footage (or any file based format to be honest). I’d hate to do my editing and then have to re-ingest everything and essentially start from scratch!

AMA is much faster to transcode to Avid DNX or other resolutions than straight old school import. Allows for more options when transcoding and relinking.

You might want to look at getting QTChange from VideoToolshed to add time of day timecode to the movie files from the Canon THM files. Avid appears to derive timecode on 5D footage from the file creation time/date, which is different and can be a problem under certain conditions.

AH! Very interesting software…been playing with it…so if I assume correctly in an offline you would use QTChange to give it timecode and make the REELNAME the same as what you’ve named the folder that holds the DCIM and MISC folders? Is that correct workflow for an offline??

read the chapter in help on AMA …especially relinking.

its essential that any low res copies have the same timecode as your hi res versions and that you have a sensible organizing structure. The reel name is more important for FCP. I don’t think Avid even sees the QT embedded reel name.

e-mail the author of QT change, if you have questions. He is very knowledgable and responsive.
