I am currently working on a project that involves a gun shot explosion that is blasted through the back of the characters shoulder. This will be a profile shot of the character and I want to simulate the cltohing of the character to explode out from the back with the simulated blood. I have tried using a simple particle generator to simulate the clothing blast. It does not seem to give me the effect tht I am looking for. This particular effect I have not seen yet in anything else. If anyone can understand this post and what I am going for please help with any suggestions or links to examples.

    Thanks A lot

Here is what I would do:

Create a pattern of the clothing in Photoshop or AE.
Make a few instances of it and mask each in different ways.
    Convert them into 3D layers.
For a couple of the instances, move the anchor point to the base of the mask and position it on the character’s back. Animate rotations on the y axis to make it appear to rip open and flap.

Animate the other instances flying away from the character and tumbling on multiple axes.

Animate the shapes of the masks over time to make it more organic.

You could also try using some 3D lights or ramp effects and the like to simulate lighting and lighting changes.

Not as simple as a particle system, but it will get the job done and allow you to tweak the look exactly as you want. Of course, you’ll need to comp in blood effects also.
