Could someone help me figure out what the best way to add in some sort of flash in a gun barrel to make it look like a gun fired? I want it to look like the shot they do in the sample of bullet-time effect. Thanks.

Try a single frame (or 2) of a lens flare on the barrel. I’ve done that before and had some success. If you want it to work – and this goes for all effects – keep it short. Show something else and just keep the sound of the gun fire, showing only a few frames of muzzle flash. At least that is what I did.

I have done this several times. Length of 2 frames seems to be the best (as mentioned). Go to https://www.detonationfilms.com/free_stuff.htm and download the muzzle flash jpgs. You will find what you need there. Just resize and position using composite and you have a perfect muzzle flash. I have downloaded and used several of their special effects. I have also used Particle Illusion for explosions and gun shots.
