  • guide: AVID roundtrip workflow (proper)

This would be my workflow for an Avid/Resolve workflow with roundtrip functionality. It pre-supposes a near future in which Resolve will correctly detect reel names from MXF, and correctly calculate timecodes for 29.97.

I’ll use a broadcast 29.97 piece for the example. Please correct where you see inefficiencies.

    • Consolidate your avid timeline with handles to a new Avid_MediaFiles directory
    • prep for video only, un-nest any “collapsed” tracks, etc
    • render out the Avid TL to a low res offline QT.
    • Convert the offline QT 29.97 offline to 30fps (I use compressor with frame controls, very fast)
    • Break the Avid TL into manageable chunks/reels, and export EDL’s of chunks.
    • set EDL settings to RED16 preset not the 3600 preset.
    • enable file names, dissolves.
    • create a project for each reel, set to 30fps, assist using reel, embedded.
    • I’m doing separate projects per reel as it seems to get clunky fast.
    • Import rendered 30fps QT as offline clip for conform check
    • grade
    • render clips to 29.97
    • Swap the old Avid_MediaFiles directory for the new one. Rebuild databases, relink.

Hi, how do i get the RED16 EDL template onto a mac? i looked for it and the download is an .exe
    file.
can someone post just the template that can be imported into a mac?

I am not having success getting my project out of avid.
I have consolidated and transcoded the xdcam media to dnx145 to a fresh AvidMediaFiles folder.
    Installed the Red16 template.
in EDL Manager Change Reel ID Type to ‘Tape or File Name’.
Under options tab in EDL Manager I have tried it with ‘Optimize the EDL’ checked and unchecked
also the ‘Include source table with saved EDL’ checked.
Under the Comments tab in EDL Manager I have ‘Source File’ and ‘Clip Names’ Checked.

When i add folder to media pool from edl, no media gets added to media pool. Or i can add
my AvidMediaFiles folder and then try to open edl/aaf nothing links.

What am I doing wrong here?
    thanks

You’ll need 7.03 to do this which is only a matter of time.

    OK until then,
what’s the procedure for getting my project over to resolve and back?
    thanks

    search for my workaround thread.

Sorta a pain in the ass though. Unless you absolutely HAVE to make a deadline, I would wait for 7.03.

I will look for your workaround, I do have a number of shows to get out the door soon.
Any word on how soon 7.03 will arrive?
    thanks

I’m confused. I thought AVID file support would mean AVID file support. What good is seeing the AVID files in Resolve if I can’t use them? Or am I missing something?
In your temp workaround, is there a quick way to:

“change framerates to 29.97 and add tape names to match Avid sources.”

    in metacheater?

    thanks

Yes, there is but its a pain in the ass. And I only documented the conceptual points, which means you’ll need to flush out the details on your own.

Seriously wait for 7.03 to come out and save yourself the headache.

Email me if you need more explanation on the workaround.
