GTX 285 & GT120 combo boots to black screen on First Gen Mac
Posted by Dave Boampong on February 2, 2012 at 9:02 pmHi Guys,
I installed the MacVid GTX285 in slot 1 and the GT 120 into slot 3 on my First Gen MacPro (Slow Leopard 10.6.8) after removing my ATI X1900XT. When I start the machine all I get is a black screen. So I have not been able to install the ATI_Init or anything else. Should I have installed the ATI_Init before removing the ATI X1900XT? What should I do?
Regards

February 2, 2012 at 10:49 pmYou have to install the enabler kext files for the GTX-285 before you install the card if I remember correctly. I assume it boots with the GT-120 alone? OSX does not want to let the GTX card run on the Gen-1 Mac-Pro because it is a PCIe V2.0 card and that machine has older (Bottleneck) V1.0 slots.

I managed to get it to boot now but as soon as I start Resolve Lite 8.1.1 or Premiere Pro 5 the machine hangs. System profiler also reports Vram as 512M for both cards. Is it a bad 285?

February 3, 2012 at 7:07 amI assume it is flashed for mac? What enabler did you use to get the card to run? I had a older Mac-Pro (an early 8-core) that I ran a GTX-285 GT-120 combo in when I first started using Resolve and I know there was some additional steps I had to go through to get the card to run. I can try to dig up those files but they might have gone with the machine when I sold it…
Where did you get the GTX-285?

February 3, 2012 at 8:36 amI got it from MacVidCards and I used Kexthelper and installed the ATI_Init kext to enable the card. Rob If you could find those files that would be great.
Cheers Dave.

February 4, 2012 at 12:49 amHe would have had same files as you.
I suspect that you were sent the wrong GT120.
Please email or pm me an address to send you a replacemet.
For now, try just the GTX285. There will be no boot screen but card should show up once desktop reached.

February 4, 2012 at 5:40 pmI do not still have those files but I think I got them from Mac Vid Cards anyway and they will support their cards.
