    there are a lot of ways to do this – none of them are free – either the cost is time and effort, or money.

    to create that particular effect, you could either use Jayse’s masking method, or maybe the stroke effect or the paint tool over a path to use as a matte to reveal the vine and branches. But you have to time the animations out so the branches start “growing” on time.

    Also Trapcode 3D stroke can be used to create a vine growing with varying thickness along the path (plus, again, extra paths for each of the branches are needed).

    Also, if all of that seems hard, video copilot.net offers a collection of growing vine animations called Evolution.

    Again there are a lot of ways – more then I’ve mentioned here, I’m sure. But hopefully these will get you started.
