Grids and guides for Premiere Pro
Premiere needs this stuff sooner rather than later? Delivering portrait social versions of existing commercials for – facebook particularly – can involve split screens where existing assets, like cars, can’t survive outside of 16:9. There are also issues with custom title safe relative to the FB feed cut off for 9:16 portrait.
I’ve made overlay grids in PS for vertical thirds etc – but it would be great to the point of being obvious for PPro to provide some kind of ruler, grid and guides you could invoke in the program monitor. It comes into my head most days at this stage.
and Yes – I’ve hit the go wish request. Just wondering if there’s more than me waiting for this.

As a workaround I’ve used a grid effect on an adjustment layer.

You might want to look at “Andy’s Safe Guides,” a free plug-in from FX Factory.

It doesn’t have anything for FB, but it does have an easy ability to customize whatever safe guides you might want.

I remember Andy’s Safe Guides from Al Jazeera promos circa 2006! Can’t believe I’m about to go and try to dig that plugin out to help me with basic functionality in Premiere Pro CC 2018…

I have a trick I use when creating a grid.
1) Turn all clips being used in the grid into sub-sequences
2) Do some math to figure out what the pixel size of each video needs to be. Example.. If you want a 2×3 grid on a 1920×1080 sequence, each video will need to be 640×540.
3) Chance the sequence settings on each sub-sequence to reflect that pixel count you just calculated.
4) Do a little more math to figure out how far each video needs to move to be in the desired position.
5) Now you can move the clip around the sub-sequence for placement without having to crop anything!Hope this helps!
