  • Grey restart screen on G5 when importing footage

Posted by Jicky Ferrer on January 26, 2008 at 9:28 pm

This problem appeared recently after I installed Nortons on my G5.
    (4×2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 – Memory 8 GB DDR2 SDRAM)

When importing footage on FCP 5.1.4 from a DSR11 my cpu will lock up with the grey restart screen.
Shortly after that if I don’t hit restart right away the cpu starts to rev like an engine.
I removed Nortons thinking the problem might go away but it has not.
When I work in other programs like CS2 I don’t have any problems. Just when I am importing on FCP.
I installed Norton/idefrag due to getting dropped frames on my import of media. Now this problem is happening. Any thoughts?

This is a well-known issue, sorry you got caught. Antivirus applications stash little bits of themselves all over your system, kinda like a virus.

If you uninstall Symantec products using the Finder, you won’t get all the bits.

Seems obvious to me. Uninstall the Symantec products.
Defragging a media drive generally isn’t necessary but the topic is an endless controversy around here.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

If that gray screen has multiple languages on it, then it is called a Kernal Panic.

99% of all kernal panics are caused by janked up software. Definitely uninstall the Norton AV.

Also there is really no need to have virus software on your mac, as you have experienced, they will cause more problems then they will ever prevent on a mac.

I have NEVER seen a actual virus on OS X.

Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Thank you Zane and David for your responses. I’ve removed the offending software and will definitely read the manual from here on end.
