just purchased (haven’t but received) a new ag-dvx100b for $1749… i’m aware this is a grey market camera intended to be sold only in japan – it comes with no usa warranty and no accessories (thus the ~$1000 cheaper price). Does anyone know if this camera will definitely need an american firmware disk or will function properly without a “firmware update?” Thanks.

Hard to say- who knows what you’ll actually receive. But DVX100s are not firmware upgradeable by the user anyway so no sense worrying now.

I discovered today that USAPhotonation.com is offering the AG-DVX100B for $1749 -however- without paying an additional $1000 the camera would be useless – apparently they update the firmware to english language menus, etc. and throw in the usual accessories. Noah- thanks for clarifying about dealers and service centers only doing the firmware installation.

Ha ha ha ha- right…. The $1,000 “firmware update.” That’s a new con. Usually it’s just the $500 battery and $500 charger that doesn’t come with the camera.
