I’m about to purchase a dvx100a and I notice grey market versions are available for a full thousand less than the version with a U.S. guarantee. Does anyone know of a facility where a grey market version could be reliably repaired? A third-party warranty? Or is it just too risky to get a grey market model? $1600 is a lot less than $2600 adn I’d like to pay the lower price if I can get away with it…

It’s probably not $1000 less, because a lot of these guys take out things like the battery, charger, lens hood, etc and charge you way too much for them. Try to buy the camera without the overpriced accessories and your order will be backordered until you die of old age. There is no free lunch.

But AFAIK you can get your camera repaired at any Panny servce center (you will pay for it), they just don’t honor any non-US warranties.

Look up any of those gray-market sellers on resellerratings.com to see how the scam works.

Short story: you will not get any product at all, without spending at least $3400. Through overpriced worthless “accessories”, inflated shipping charges, etc., basically every invoice that anyone’s posted about, show that the total bill comes to $3400.

Buy instead from an authorized reseller, you’ll get the same price, but you’ll also get a $300 rebate, the DVX Book/DVD, Magic Bullet for Editors software, a box of the new Advanced Master Quality tapes, and a free 5400mah battery. Not to mention you actually get a warranty too.

You won’t get any of that stuff if you go gray-market.

Get the most from your DVX camera. The DVX Book and DVX DVD are now available at https://www.dvxuser.com/articles/dvxbook/ and at Amazon (https://tinyurl.com/54u4a)

I bought (unknowingly) from a grey market dealer. I called and first asked if this camera was eligible for the rebate. “yes”. I checked their user references on the internet – over 90% positive. I paid less than the ‘normal’ price, but not less than the rebate. I got the camera that I ordered, and not a lot of flim-flam. Do I regret it? you bet. Do I feel a little taken? sure. Was I completely ripped off? No, I did get the camera at the price (Jan informed me it was a canadian version).

Hope that gives you some perspective

When you buy a car, you can always cancel the “extended warranty” before the term ends… can you do this with these grey market dealers? Maybe you can ask for the warranty, get the camera, and then cancel it…
