Hi, I figured I’d pass this by everybody here..
I’m going to upgrade the 2600 card in my MacPro 8-core 2.8, but can anyone recommend which card to get?
Im using FCP, Shake..thats about it, and I have 2 Dell 2407s.

Thanks so much in advance, you guys are great.

    (anyone need a 2600? lol)
(oh by the way, i have an ad on here selling my brand new decklink extreme HD and my panasonic 17″ LH1700W…………)

I don’t have a message signature, and I’m comfortable with that.

Go for the 3870 every time, benchmarks (and real life performance) are better than the 8800. I’ve seen many more rendering and general GUI issues on the 8800 when working with FCPS/Shake

https://barefeats.com/harper16.html for some core image app benchmarks.

We don’t spec any Mac Pro edit suites with 8800s, and we send out 3/4 a week with no issues (Touch wood)

I just “upgraded” to the 3870 and I’m having tons of problems with projects made under the original 2600 configuration.

I’m hoping to get soon the Matrox Triple Head2Go Digital to been able to use three monitors, but in the meantime, my old 2 monitor configuration (with the 3870 instead of the 2600) is not working either.

I get constant crashes and problems rendering, very long waits to open/close/save projects, etc.

I still haven’t try working new projects created under the 3870 configuration, but my old projects are not responding well.

I don’t know if it is the card or just corruption in the files, but maybe somebody can test the response of the 3870 on FCP.

As I said, we use 3870s in most of our FCP suites in house and the systems we config for major clients with no issues so far. Have you installed all the correct drivers? The 3870 doesnt have its drivers built into the OS like the 2600, 8800 and 4500 do.

This does bring up a bigger issue though – you shouldn’t change your hardware setup before your projects are finished! I’d suggest trying a new user account and see if you have the same issues.
