I am trying to input a graphic into FCP2 with a premultiplied alpha. Its a company logo and is solid red text with white edges.

When creating the logo in Shake, everything looks great – clean and accurate. I export as Animation at highest quality with alpha.

Import into FCP, switch alpha to Black, the Graphic looks fine when in Viewer, as soon as i drop it on the timeline the colour changes and a blocky noise pattern appears inside the red areas.

I have tried exporting different versions from Shake with different saturation and chroma settings but the end result is always the same.

I’m working in 10bit Uncompressed Pal SD, render settings are high precision YUV. I’m running on a quad G5 with Kona 3. This problem also occured on the previous version of fCP so its not to do with FCS2. I have tried rendering the timeline and that does not help either.
The saturation and luminance signals all look within the limits

If i resize the graphic, the noise scales as well, which suggests the noise is being added to the clip during the insert to timeline process, rather than occuring in the video card.

anyone got any wise words to point me toward a solution.

The size sent from shake was exactly the same as the timeline’s in FCP? Are you judging this on an external video monitor? i.e. don’t let FCP resize it, and judge it externally. Might also try setting the canvas to 100 % size. If it were me though, I’d also try building the composite completely in Shake… that way FCP doesn’t affect it, and you just export it matching the timeline settings you’re going to place this composite in.

I would also try to render the alpha as straight instead of pre-multiplied if that’s an option in Shake.
