  • Grading Through LUTS a bit confused.

Hello, I am grading LOG footage, not actually from Film, but from EXRs that used a bit of dynamic range so they had to be converter from EXR linear to 10bit DPX as to not clip, that was done using the Lin2Log plugin in After Effects. I build my own LUT from NUKE using the COLOR MATRIX that analyzes the colors to do a LOG to LIN conversion, using this LUT I imported it into DaVinci to grade.

I double checked this LUT in NUKE and it worked perfectly, so I know the LUT is spot on, but when I brought it into DaVinci, it was really flat, I added the LUT on the node and it still looked flat, I played around with it and what happened was that it only looked right if I added the LUT to the Timeline Lookup Table and the Node itself. So I had a double LUT?

Is that right? It seems that I am adding two luts, one on the timeline and one on the node. Please Advise to the proper workflow.

    Thank You!

If you load a Log clip into Resolve and are monitoring Rec709 via SDI the conversion is automatically done. I am grading a 35mm picture right now which is 2K 10bit log DPX and I am monitoring on a Plasma as Rec709 and the pic works fine. I have a calibration LUT for the monitor (made with Light Space) that is on the output but does not apply to the scopes.

So I think that if you load your LUT you are basically doing as you said and applying the LUT twice.

    Alexander,
If your picture looks good while being double luted you could have exported the clips incorrectly form nuke. What did you pass to resolve? If you rendered out cineons or dpx’s you may have double loged your files. Just a thought.

    Cheers,
