Joost Korngold (Renescent) did that animation entirely in 3D Studio MAX using Particleflow, Reactor, shatter and a few other tools. AE was only used for CC and editing……

If you study his work you can re-create alot of it in AE, however her prefers to do as much as possible entirely ‘in-camera’ so to speak (meaning in the 3D app render).
