GPU and Video Editing Question
Hi there,
I apologize if this is the wrong place for this post,
If so, please direct me to the proper section.I am a video editor and recently I have been getting 5k footage to work with, I was working with FCPX and it was relatively slow to begin with, but after a few edits; superimpositions, fades ect the program would freeze up and cease to respond.
I thought if I upgraded to a computer with better ram/hd it might help my process. so thats what I did, what I didn’t account for was the Graphics card. I’m not sure if this will make a major impact on my editing or not. but any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
here are the specs.Old Model:
Macbook pro. early 2011

4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256MB
15.4 inch (14404 x 900)
500GB HDNew Model:
Macbook pro. early 2011
2 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB *
15.4-inch (1680 x 1050)
750GB HD -

Either of those cards will be slow in X. Try switching to proxy mode.

You can generate proxies when you import your clips. It’s an option in the properties section on the right of the import window.
Since you already have clips in your project you want to:
- Select the clip you want to make a proxy for…
- Select the Info tab
- Press the Generate Proxy button
You can also select multiple clips and use File | Transcode Media and then in the window that appears, select the Create proxy media checkbox and click OK.
