About the only thing that came out that was new for FCP and others is the multibridge from Deckllink. Apple did not have anything and AJA came out with their Kona 3 already so nothing there. Avid kicked ass so FCP might be in for a hard run.

Nothing new? Avid kicked ass? HAHAHAHAHA!

Kona 3 now offers Full 2K support…and it can play out 2K to your 30″ cinema display, cropped to an HD SDI monitor AND downconverted to an NTSC monitor…all in real time. 2K footage. And it, like the decklink, can downconvert or upconvert without going thru the computer…card only.

They showcased HDV 24p editing for the JVC and Canon HDV cameras (coming soon).

Showed off Picture Ready…ingesting of 4 streams of uncompressed footage simultaneously that you can begin editing SECONDS after the capture has started. Edit it while it is capturing.

Do that Avid. To get an avid that can do what FCP can do you need to spend $22k…for the software and Avid box only. No computer…no RAM…no drives. For 22k I can deck out an FCP system with everything BUT the HD monitor.

FCP can now edit XDCAM footage…it has XDCAM support.

Don’t get me wrong. I am an Avid guy too, but still, I lean towards FCP as feature for feature it is cheaper and does the same things, if not more. With Avid you get, well, editing software. With FCP I get editing software, PLUS Motion, Soundtrack, Cinema Tools, LIvetype. And the Kona 3 smokes the Avid cards pretty hard.

    IMHO.

“To get an avid that can do what FCP can do you need to spend $22k…”

If only this were true, try $90K, I wish our Adrenaline with DNxHD board could do uncompressed HD. We now have an FCP Kona3 setup that seems to smoke our Adrenaline when it comes to HD. Avid promised that MCA would be able to do uncompressed HD with an upgrade card a year and a half ago. Now when you ask there guys at the trade shows when it’s coming, they look at you with a bewildered look and say “Uncompressed HD on an Adrenaline??? Only symphony and DS can do that.” This was a response that I got at a trade show a year ago at which time I reached over and grabbed the Adrenaline brochure and pointed out to they guy where it talks about the uncompressed card for future release. If you try and find any info about this option now, well it is nowhere to be found, it’s as though it has fallen compleatly off the map. I just wonder what Avid plans to do with that big hole on the back of the DNxHD card now.

    Best Regards,

AJA introduced HD Cross Convert and 2K support which was all looking amazing in their booth.

Yeah, Avid kicked ass with their sound system which once again was so loud it was impossible to sit in on any demos within about 100 yards or so. I tried to listen to the guys in the EyeOn booth, but it was pretty darn impossible. In my survey response to NAB I suggested moving Avid to an outdoor theater so they can just play their sound demos as loud as they please.

[jbrad2] “AJA came out with their Kona 3 already so nothing there.” X < 1080 cross conversion in real time is a big deal to the rest of us.. and there are people outside of LA that need a real 2K workflow. Updated Plugins from GenArts and Automatic Duck.A new release from CHV also. Panasonic announced a new DVCPROHD deck (1400) with full editing capabilities and no options(about time) PL and B4 Lens adaptor kits for all for all of "prosumer" cameras HVX, FX1, Zu1, HD100u. 2k and 4K were the talk of the show - but Hitachi showed a 8K imager -that needed 16 HDSDI cables to move the data to the array. The future is now.... gary adcock Studio37 HD & Film Consultation Post and Production Workflows Chicago, IL gary@studio37.com

yeah and don’t forget the new tape based camera with SD/720/1080i shooting capabilities for people who still need to shoot tape, but didn’t want to purchase a Varicam. Very nice thing to see.

It’s incredibly cool. The woman was doing the demo right next to me at the AJA booth. As soon as she started recording the live feed from the camera, she threw it into the timeline and it just kept recording and growing the clip in the timeline. You can literally play back a shot within seconds of it happening. Excellent for live TV or live events.

    Yes
this was the app that Peter Wiggins used in conjunction with FCP for his Tour de France project last year.
