    Hey all,

So I have been working a lot with AE and other software, such as FCP, etc. etc. I bought LaCie because I thought it was a good brand. But recently my hard drive, which is like 5 or 6 months old, crashed, for no reason. I didn’t drop it or anything. Just stopped working and I lost all my files… I’ve also come across several friends who’ve had the same issues with LaCie.

Is there a better drive to use with all the saves and rendering that goes with AE and other programs, or is LaCie it? Obviously I’m looking for something reasonably priced. I think my LaCie new was $200-$300 dollars. It was 1TB.

    Thanks
    Scott

    Hi Scott,

Try Western Digital. I have been using them for quite some time. The first drive I bought 6 years ago is still going strong.

    Cheers.

All hard drives die. It is a matter of when, not if.

I had liked Seagate (prior to their bad run a couple years ago) and Hitachi (prior to being bought out by Western Digital). I’m not sure if it really matters anymore — there are only three hard drive manufacturers left [link].

Some external drive failures are not actually drive failures; they are enclosure failures. Disassembling the enclosure (voiding your warranty), removing the drive, and placing it in a new enclosure may make it usable again.
