Going from SD-PAL (DVCPro50) to HD, using AJ-HPX500 – 720pN or 1080i for SD DVD, web, etc
After using our HPX-500 for some years shooting SD, we might just find the courage to dip our toes in the HD ocean… 🙂
We edit using FCP7, shooting with an HPX500 (4x16GB, but most likely we’d have to buy some more P2 cards…)
We’re using Video Purifier and BitVice for DVD compression.
If we choose 720p, we realise we have to adapt to the “jumpniess” when there’s fast motion in the picture….
OTH, film has always been progressive… hard to choose here!What do you suggest we choose for shooting? Documentary, industrial video. Delivery on SD DVD, web, etc.
Fire away any questions you might have, I have surely forgotten something to help you suggest which path to go…

You’ve had the 500 for years and never shot HD????
720p/60p can be great for motion and sports.
When you first get into HD shooting it can be a little over whelming with choices and formats and decisions.
Guess what?? It’s no big deal. Shoot what ever and it’ll be fine.
If you have broadcast avenues to hit, then you need to be on board with their specs.
Otherwise; 1080i/60i looks great on Bluray and DVD (SD)
You can export a Progressive version of the edit for web.1080i/60i/24p or 30p looks great on Bluray and DVD (SD)
You can export a Progressive version of the edit for web.720p/24p or 30p or 60p look great on web and bluray and dvd.
Best way to dip your toe is to jump in. Your late – hurry up!
