Going from FCP offline to avid simphony online
Posted by Moztu on May 27, 2005 at 11:58 amHi
we are editing a 52′ documentary on FCP and are going to an online onto avid simphony.
we thought of going with an edl, is this the best way?
what about xml export? Would it work better?
thanks

May 27, 2005 at 12:23 pmI’ve had very good results with Automatic Duck (XML to OMF.) We used it on a 48 min UK Documentary last year. The online editor said it was brilliant. Check the Automatic Duck website for a list of supported filter/effects.
But if your film’s just cuts and dissolves, it may not be worth the price – an EDL would be fine.
EITHER WAY, DON’T LEAVE ANY NESTED EDITS IN THERE!

Whilst an EDL should work to a certain extent, I am told they are limited in scope as to what they can contain
ie. they do not describe all of the editing you may have done in your offline edit, and have problems (I believe) with transferring audio fades, and multi-layered video -

May 27, 2005 at 2:58 pmJust make the move to buy Automatic duck Pro Export. It will cost about the same as the 2-3 hours of Symphony time used to make your multiple edls (for each video layer) make sense visually once you’ve done the conform.
That is assuming you have more than 1 video layer in your sequence. If you have just got an edit that is cuts and mixes then by all means try an edl. You may want to provide an OMFi export of your sound and also a stereo mixdown of your sequence as a wav file (or aiff) for the online editor to lay down as a guide.
