Does anybody know the details;; Gigabit has to be fast.. Raid 5, yes.. Does not list Mac software. 4TB for $3K very nice price. Should I add this to Santa’s list?

Sorry, but its not fast enough for editing anything except DV, but its nice for backup.

Just so you know, 4Tb = 4x1Tb SATA drives, available for just $380 each. A hotswapple SATA enclosure and controller card can be had for about $700. So, for $2220 you could have a much better and faster hard drive subsystem that would give you excellent throughput.

…but the trade off is no reliability in that the raid will run unprotected @ Raid0.

So you back up to cheap hard drives in a $60 enclosure.

Hey, I know. But you gotta put that in the purchase price/workflow

    Jeremy,

When I started working in the digital domain a 1.5Gb hard drive cost $2000. So, I’m pretty much desensitized to discussions involving minor expenses such as backing up to a $110 drive in a $60 enclosure.

The bottom line is, one can triple the cost of a raid and get it to do raid-5, cartwheels and jumping jacks, or you can spend your money much more judiciously, set up a bitchin raid-0, back it up to to very inexpensive hard drives and then spend the many excess dollars you’ll save on something much more important.

BTW, I saw a 2007 Mercedes Benz McClaren 722 the other day. Check out the link below. For the people who can afford the $550,000 price tag, it will probably get you from point A to point B a bit quicker than a $20,000 Prius, but is it really necessary? More importantly, if the salesman forgot to mention that it requires high test gasoline would that have blown the sale or made it any less attractive? https://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2006/112_news060926_mercedes_benz_paris_motor_show/photo_05.html

You have obviously never had a drive fail on you in the middle of a production, or worse yet, on output day.

All I am saying is, if you run Raid0, be prepared for extra time and money for a backup system, which will eventually catch up to you somehow, time wise or money wise.

There’s a big price difference between a Mercedes and a Prius, but not that much between 2 grand for Raid0 and 3-4 grand for Raid 4 or 5 with customer support. Apples and oranges.

Well, in rush hour traffic in Manhattan, the Mercedes and the go the same speed.

    Hi,
I was just wondering why you say Gigabit ethernet raid isn’t good for anything more than DV?
What kind of bandwidth do you need?
The reason I ask is that I have a NAS 1TB Raid (4×250) w/Gb ethernet for all my other stuff (music/movie streaming through the house and basic backup/file storage)–no video editing yet, but am considering my needs for space and future HD Video, Final cut server coming out and the cost of an Xserve raid w/fiberchannel vs more inexpensive solutions.
Do you think or know if Fiberchannel would be enough? What about Gigabit with 15K drives on a lower cost raid box?
I would really appreciate your comments.
    Thanks
